Duncan Scores Top Four Finish at 2006 FEI Young Rider Dressage World Cup Final

Ottawa, Ontario---
Alexandra Duncan of West Vancouver, BC represented Canada at the second annual FEI Young Rider Dressage World Cup Final, held December 15-17 in Frankfurt, GER, finishing in fourth place overall.

In the opening class, the FEI Young Rider Team Test, held December 14, Duncan put in a solid performance aboard her 11-year-old Holsteiner mare Elektra, scoring 66% for fifth place.

“The team test went well. Elektra didn’t react too much to the ring, but it was amazing to be in there for the first time,” said Duncan, who the previous weekend achieved a seventh place finish at the CDY-CDJ Kreuth Dressurgala December 8 – 10 in preparation for the World Cup. “The ring was in a dome building so you could hear everything. It was quite spectacular, I had never heard anything like it, but Elektra still didn’t bother too much.”

In the following day’s Prix St. Georges test, Duncan improved upon her initial score, receiving 66.950%, again finishing in fifth place which qualified her to proceed to the top A group for the Freestyle. After a brilliant ride in her final class, the Kur A Finale, Duncan scored 70.500% to finish in fourth place overall.

“The horse quality was amazing; they were top, top horses. I was so pleased to finish fourth overall. Elektra was super and we both worked hard. I couldn’t have asked for anything more,” commented Duncan.

The most memorable part of the competition for Duncan was the final prize giving ceremony. “They sent the Grand Prix riders in with the Young Riders, and we did the victory gallop in pairs according to placing. At the end every horse passaged and it was a unique - the clapping sounded so powerful, it felt like you were in a movie!”

Duncan finished her rookie year at the Young Rider level with a bang when she was identified as the Canadian representative for the World Cup based on her 2006 Young Rider results at FEI competitions. Duncan competed against the top 12 Young Riders from around the world, including The Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Austria, France, Portugal, Czechoslovakia, Poland and United States. Riders were able to get a taste of truly international, world-class competition during the Final.

Duncan is coached regularly under the watchful eye of Pan Am Gold medalist Leslie Reid. While preparing for the FEI Young Rider World Cup, Duncan was able to base herself at the beautiful Hofgut Neuhof, located just south of Frankfurt, where she trained with Dutch Olympian Ellen Bontje leading up to the Finals.

“It is an experience I will remember for the rest of my life. I felt very proud to represent my country and placing was a bonus,” said Duncan, who earlier this year helped the Canada West Young Rider Dressage Team bring home the Gold Medal from the 2006 North American Junior/Young Riders’ Championships.”

Alexandra Duncan of West Vancouver, BC contested the CDY-CDJ Kreuth Dressurgala, held in Kreuth, GER from December 8 - 10, in preparation for the FEI Young Rider World Cup, which began on December 12 in Frankfurt, GER.
Riding Elektra, her 11-year-old Holsteiner mare, Duncan kicked off her first ever German competition in the FEI Junior Team class, where she scored 62.44% to tie for 21st place.
"I was really happy with my horse, especially since the arena was filled with giant Santas and nativity scenes. The entire arena was like a Christmas forest and Elektra took it all in stride," commented Duncan.
Next up was the Individual class, where the duo made a significant improvement, placing tenth on a score of 65.08%. Duncan closed out the competition in the Kur, earning her highest score of the competition with 66.92% and seventh place.
"The quality of riding and the horse caliber at this competition was exceptional. Every single rider rode with military precision," explained Duncan. "The main difference I felt here compared to competitions in North America was the sheer competitive nature of all the riders. Each one rode like they were going to win, with accurate tests given. I can sum up the overall experience in one word - wow!"

Duncan was identified as the Canadian representative for the World Cup based on her 2006 results at FEI competitions. She will be competing against the top 17 Young Riders from around the world, including Europe, South America, Africa and Asia. Riders will get a taste of truly international, world-class competition during the Final, where they will contest the FEI Young Rider Team, Prix St. Georges and Freestyle tests.
"Had I not done this competition, I doubt I would have been prepared to compete at the Young Rider World Cup," said Duncan, who helped the Canada West Young Rider Dressage Team bring home the Gold Medal from the 2006 North American Junior/Young Riders’ Championships, held in Lexington, VA this past August. "On day one of the show I felt awed and intimidated, but I feel much more confident now that I have ridden with some of the best riders in Germany."
Canada took part at the inaugural 2005 FEI Young Rider World Cup Final where Julie Watchorn, of Schomberg, ON, took third place in the consolation round aboard Quintesse.

General Meeting held Fri., Nov. 3/06, featuring guest speaker Glenn Hendricks, Physiotherapist

14 enthusiastic Young Riders, and 9 moms, turned out for a very interesting and educational presentation by physiotherapist Glenn Hendricks on Nov. 3rd at Cloverdale Library.  Glenn is a rider himself and competed in 3 day eventing at NAYRC some years ago.  His objectives were:

  • to provide a greater awareness of the demands placed on the dressage rider's body as viewed from a physical therapy paradigm, and
  • to provide the rider with tools that will not only benefit equestrian performance but will facilitate positive changes in other activities.

Glenn challenged the riders to defend why the rider is as much an athlete as the horse, and they did so, concluding that riding is a “team sport” – horse and rider together.

He encouraged cross-training in activities that focus on core strength, such as Pilates, yoga, tai-chi, and others, and emphasized balance, core stability, flexibility (especially hips), strength, endurance, and mental training (sports psychology) that develops focus, concentration, visualization, relaxation, and determination.  He recommended core training every day and endurance training 3 times a week, and advised low impact activities such as pool running, cycling, swimming, and ballet.

Glenn showed ways to identify the asymmetries that each person has, and some ways to address these to “make you well and keep you well”, demonstrating stretches that help develop body awareness.  He showed some simple tools (foam half-round, foam tube, and 2 tennis balls in a sock!) to aid in stretching and flexibility exercises, and offered suggestions on how to fit this into your busy schedule.  He emphasized that you will always need to do certain exercise to maintain your physical fitness and flexibility.

The girls came away with a better understanding of the effects that riding has on their bodies and the effects their bodies have on their riding, and how they can train to improve and maintain their fitness as it relates to riding.

Many thanks to Glenn for generously sharing his expertise and experience with B.C. Young Riders!
